Duel Reality

Working with Wouter Walmink, Harry Lee, and the rest of the crew at the Exertion Games Lab, we created Duel Reality – a digitally enabled sword-fighting game. The state of your own body will determine where your opponent has to hit you to score a point. Linking heart rate, breathing rhythm or posture into the system promotes a mixed gameplay of flow and self-awareness.

This research project explores how we can create compelling exertion gameplay by intentionally hiding biofeedback and other forms of real-time body data from the players, but not their opponents.
